VETASSESS – Update 1 July 2017 changes

VETASSES has updated its website following the 1 July 2017 changes.

Following the changes to the occupation lists, VETASSES advises that it is no longer the assessing authority for the following occupations:

  • Acupuncturist (ANZSCO Code 252211)
  • Orthotist/ Prosthetist (ANZSCO Code 251912)
  • Community Worker (ANZSCO Code 411711)
  • Youth Worker (ANZSCO Code 411716)
  • Welfare Centre Manager (ANZSCO Code 134214)

Further changes are outlined on the VETASSESS website, including:

  • information for applicants whose occupations have been removed from the lists
  • TradeSet updates
  • cooks and chefs from Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan
  • closure of the Optional Skills Assessment Service

On 18 April 2017, the Government announced a number of reforms to Australia’s temporary and permanent skilled visa programmes. Implementation of the reforms commenced on 19 April 2017 and will be completed by March 2018.  For information about these reforms – see:

In addition to the reforms which have already been implemented on 19 April 2017, there are a number of further changes which will take effect on 1 July 2017. These changes will specifically impact on the following temporary and permanent skilled migration programmes:

The 457 Skills Assessment Program

You will need to apply for a skills assessment under the 457 Skills Assessment Program if you:
  • hold a passport from one of the nominated countries or Special Administrative Regions (SARs) in the table below; and
  •  are seeking a skills assessment in any of the following occupations in the table below.

Passport Legislation Amendment (Overseas Travel by Child Sex Offenders) Bill 2017

The Passport Legislation Amendment (Overseas Travel by Child Sex Offenders) Bill 2017 has been read for the second time in the House of Representatives.

The purpose of this Bill is to prevent Australians listed on a State or Territory child sex offender register, with reporting obligations, from travelling overseas to sexually exploit or sexually abuse vulnerable children in overseas countries, where the law enforcement framework is weaker and their activities are not monitored.

Two-thirds of recent migrants and temporary residents employed

Some 65 per cent of Australia’s 1.7 million recent migrants and temporary residents were employed in November 2016, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.

Tasks
  • planning menus, estimating food and labour costs, and ordering food supplies
  • monitoring quality of dishes at all stages of preparation and presentation
  • discussing food preparation issues with Managers, Dietitians and kitchen and waiting staff
  • demonstrating techniques and advising on cooking procedures
  • preparing and cooking food
  • explaining and enforcing hygiene regulations
  • may select and train staff
  • may freeze and preserve foods

Skill Level
Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with the qualifications and experience outlined below.

Group: 3514 Cooks

Description
prepare, season and cook food in dining and catering establishments.
Chefs, Fast Food Cooks and Kitchenhands are excluded from this unit group. Chefs are included in Unit Group 3513 Chefs. Fast Food Cooks and Kitchenhands are included in Minor Group 851 Food Preparation Assistants.
Tasks
  • examining foodstuffs to ensure quality
  • regulating temperatures of ovens, grills and other cooking equipment
  • preparing and cooking food
  • seasoning food during cooking
  • portioning food, placing it on plates, and adding gravies, sauces and garnishes
  • storing food in temperature controlled facilities
  • preparing food to meet special dietary requirements
  • may plan menus and estimate food requirements
  • may train other kitchen staff and apprentices
Skill Level
Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with the qualifications and experience outlined below.
In Australia: AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

Group: 1411 Cafe and Restaurant Managers

Description
organise and control the operations of cafes, restaurants and related establishments to provide dining and catering services.
Tasks
  • planning menus in consultation with Chefs
  • planning and organising special functions
  • arranging the purchasing and pricing of goods according to budget
  • maintaining records of stock levels and financial transactions
  • ensuring dining facilities comply with health regulations and are clean, functional and of suitable appearance
  • conferring with customers to assess their satisfaction with meals and service
  • selecting, training and supervising waiting and kitchen staff
  • may take reservations, greet guests and assist in taking orders
Skill Level
Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with the qualifications and experience outlined below.
In Australia: AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2)
